Habitat for HumanityThough the more exotic elements of green building like photovoltaic arrays and geothermal heating/cooling garner many of the media headlines, Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley is currently demonstrating that most green building practices are available to the average homeowner, landlord and builder for immediate application.

Brian Clark

Brian ClarkBrian Clark has long been interested in issues relating to the environment. Working with Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley (HFHRV), he drew on his BS in Environmental Science (Roanoke College) and Individualized MA in Environmental Studies (Goddard College) to research, evaluate and apply green building practices in recent projects. As a result of Brian’s steady efforts and a dawning realization that green building practices add value and lower bills for their homeowners, Habitat completed its first Energy Star certified home in 2008. Brian is now coordinating the Affiliate’s first Earth Craft certified home.
Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley’s commitment to provide not just homes, but a home with lower operating costs and higher market value, demonstrates ways that sustainable building leads to prosperity for any income level. If it’s possible to build high performance homes on the kinds of budget that Habitat for Humanity has to work with, it’s possible for all of us!

Facts
